“Meaning provides a
stabilizing and centering effect in a world that often is dizzying and
disorienting.
From an existential perspective, meaning is the ultimate coping
mechanism, but it is also so much more; meaning is a basic human need”
Louis Hoffman
Awareness-Meaning-Therapy
(AMT)
AMT emphasises the following fundamental principles
and skills:
(a) Motivating
and empowering clients in their struggle with personal problems and in the
pursuit of meaning and happiness
(b) Tapping into clients’ capacity for seeking
meaning and creating meaning in order to help them restore purpose, faith and
hope in their predicaments (c) Providing the necessary tools for clients to
overcome personal difficulties and anxieties to make life worth living
Meaning in
Life
A number of psychological and contemporary
spiritual theories claim that finding your purpose in life, whilst finding
meaning in each and every moment, is the greatest motivator and provides
fulfilling and joyful life experiences. The distinction between surviving life
and living life is quite simple: it is based on your awareness of the purpose
of your life.
This is not a collective purpose which accommodates
all human beings; it is your personal meaning which makes you see the world in
a completely different way. Most of us live without this precious knowledge and
therefore create a process that starts with boredom, increases to nagging
feelings of missed opportunities and finally ends in a painful sense of
meaninglessness. Many feel that life has no purpose, no challenge, no
obligation, no hope, and no escape from boredom and pain. They try to fill this
vacuum with material objects, hedonistic pursuits, addiction and blind
ambitions for power or wealth and fame. But such misguided efforts only lead to
frustration and despair.
If you are honest with yourself you can easily
detect these feelings within yourself. When you become aware of your life’s
meaning, of your own purpose, an immediate wave of passion for life moves
through you and accompanies every choice you make. Every moment becomes
meaningful and your entire life experience changes.
The AMT -
Psychological & Spiritual processes
AMT removes all unconscious blocks to allow you to
reach your primary human motive – the will to meaning. This process is both
cognitive and spiritual. The cognitive (psychological mind processes) is based
upon recognising, observing, and letting go of the patterns which prevent you
from attaining meaning. The spiritual focuses on your responsibility to live
meaningfully and purposefully in every situation on a daily basis in order to
become what you are meant to be. AMT encourages your capacity to tap into the
spiritual dimension in order to transcend the effects of stressful situations,
chronic illness, painful experiences, or burdens of the past. The human spirit
is the most important resource in therapy, because it is the basis for recovery
and resilience.
AMT sessions involve clients’ goals, directions, values,
aspirations, and objectives, while realising what is right, finding the right
solutions, making mends, and taking actions that are congruent with highest
values. This is being done while assessing levels of satisfaction or
dissatisfaction with your situation or with life as a whole.
Questions which are
asked within AMT sessions:
What should I do with my life?
What are my strengths and what
do I do best?
What are my dreams and
interests?
What is my responsibility in
this situation?
What is the right thing to do?
What option is most consistent
with my beliefs and values?
How is my life unfolding?
Have I achieved what I set out
to do?
Am I satisfied with how I have
lived my life?
If this is love, why am I
still unhappy?
Why am I so unhappy in my
profession?
What does life expect of me?
What really matters in life?
What do I value most?
What choices should I make?
